Last Saturday, four Teens Club volunteers helped weed, prune, and clean a Japanese garden. Armed with gardening tools, they spent three hours of their morning revamping the garden by weeding plants, pruning, and cleaning the pathways with shovels.
The Japanese Friendship Garden is a walled area of Kelley Park in San Jose. It was founded October 1965, and inspired by Japan's Korakuen Garden in Okayama. Its three main ponds were filled with koi sent from Okayama in 1966. The ponds are at different elevations in the park, and are connected by streams.
The park is open daily from 10 AM to 7 PM, and there are no admission fees.
Fun fact: In 2009, a deadly fish virus killed 90% of the Koi in the ponds.
